ICHTHYOSIS VULGARIS
Ichthyosis Vulgaris is a hereditary (genetic) disorderof hyperkerotic skin, which leads to dry skin.
Autosomal dominant disorder (only need one gene/from one parent to have the disorder)
Found in many atopic dermatitis individuals
Clinically is seen as excessive scaling, most often affecting the shins
- Effects mainly the extremities
- hands
- feet
- but spares the palms, soles, and flexure creases such as the skin between your elbows
- Skin appears “fish-scale-like” without any signs of inflammation, such as redness or itching
- found in about 0.3% of the population
Causes of Ichthyosis Vulgaris
- genetic disease - inherited from your parents
- associated with other skin diseases, such as atopy (asthma and eczema/dermatitis)
Treatments for Ichthyosis Vulgaris
- bath and oil immersions
- urea containing creams and oils
- emollient creams
