ICHTHYOSIS VULGARIS

Ichthyosis Vulgaris is a hereditary (genetic) disorderof hyperkerotic skin, which leads to dry skin.

Autosomal dominant disorder (only need one gene/from one parent to have the disorder)

Found in many atopic dermatitis individuals

Clinically is seen as excessive scaling, most often affecting the shins

    Appearance of Ichthyosis Vulgaris

  • Effects mainly the extremities
    • hands
    • feet
    • but spares the palms, soles, and flexure creases such as the skin between your elbows
  • Skin appears “fish-scale-like” without any signs of inflammation, such as redness or itching
  • found in about 0.3% of the population

    Causes of Ichthyosis Vulgaris

  • genetic disease - inherited from your parents
  • associated with other skin diseases, such as atopy (asthma and eczema/dermatitis)

    Treatments for Ichthyosis Vulgaris

    • bath and oil immersions
    • urea containing creams and oils
    • emollient creams
